Light Operational Vehicle (LOV)

Description

To acquire a range of light operational vehicles (LOV) to meet the New Zealand Army's motorisation requirements. These include:

Military vehicles (MV). The MV fleet will consist of 321 vehicles in six variants to fulfil a new mobility requirement to operate in concert with, and to support the light armoured vehicle. The MV fleet will consist of:

Government approval

In December 2003 the Government approved the procurement of the first tranche of 188 vehicles at a project budget of NZ$46 million excluding GST.

In June 2004 the Government approved the procurement of the second tranche of 133 vehicles at a project cost of $47 million excluding GST.

Total project cost is NZ93 million excluding GST.

Contract

A contract was awarded to Automotive Technik Ltd on 29 March 2004 for the supply of 188 Pinzgauer military vehicles. Delivery of these vehicles began in October 2004.

A further contract was signed with Automotive Technik Ltd on 25 June 2004 for the supply of 133 Pinzgauer military vehicles. This brings the total number of Pinzgauers to 321.

Note: In August 2007 the company name was changed to BAE Systems Land Systems Pinzgauer Ltd.

Current status

The New Zealand Army has been issued with all but one of the Pinzgauer vehicles. The remaining vehicle, which is in the United Kingdom and being used by the contractor for various testing requirements, will be delivered to New Zealand in June 2008.

The Phase II Cooling Enhancement rework programme for the total fleet is complete.
Test and trials of the new air conditioning system for the armoured variants has been completed and accepted. A rework program began in December 2007 and will be completed early 2008.
