New Zealand Defence Industry Awards of Excellence 2005
The Defence Industry Committee of New Zealand sponsors the New Zealand Defence Industry Awards on an annual basis. Nominations were called from the New Zealand Defence Force and other organisations with an interest in defence procurement. Seven nominations were received for the 2005 Awards.
Category A: New Zealand Defence Industry Awards of Excellence
These awards are for major suppliers of goods or services to the New Zealand Defence Force or Ministry of Defence and may include major sub-contractors or service suppliers.
Category A Winners
Yakka Apparel Solutions Limited (YASL), North Shore - for the supply of clothing, apparel and accoutrements to the New Zealand Defence Force.
YASL is commended for the way it works with local industry, with more than 90 percent of stock lines being New Zealand made. Innovation is achieved by seeking ways to streamline its warehouse and distribution systems.

Category A Highly Commended Certificates
Eurest NZ Ltd, Auckland - for the supply of hospitality and catering services to the New Zealand Defence Force.
Eurest provides hospitality and catering services for the three RNZAF bases and delivers its services in all sorts of environments and to a great range of people, from people in the field to State banquets. Eurest continues to raise the standard of service and is particularly customer- and solution-focused.

Serco Project Engineering Limited (SPEL), Upper Hutt - for the provision of goods and services to the New Zealand Defence Force.
SPEL provides depot level warehousing and engineering services to the New Zealand Army. Excellence is provided in a number of area including problem solving and improvements in the quality and productivity, whilst reducing the cost of providing these services. A partnership of co-operation and trust exists between the Army and SPEL, which plays a key and successful role in operational planning ensuring that the equipment needed for deployments is available as and when required and is fully operational.
Category B: New Zealand Defence Recognition of Industry Excellence
This category recognises subcontracting and lower level supplier companies that provide excellent service in a variety of ways, but are difficult to assess against the major contractors.
Category B Winner
MAROPS Limited, North Shore – for the design and provision of courseware material, plans and guides.
MAROPS designed and produced courseware material, including lesson plans and instructor guides for the P-3K Orion aircraft Operational Conversion Course and provided instructors, allowing RNZAF aircrew to return to their primary roles. The animation aspect of the courseware material was an innovative and exciting dimension to the training package, providing a friendlier learning experience.

Category B: Highly Commended Certificates
Martin Engineering (PN) Limited, Palmerston North – for the supply of fuel storage tanks.
Martin Engineering, contracted through BP Oil, not only manufactured the storage tanks to contract specification, but also suggested some innovative tailoring of the tank design to suit each particular site.

Nissan New Zealand Limited, Wiri – for the supply of Nissan Navara 4x4 vehicles.
Nissan along with providing the vehicles and providing coverage for the vehicles through it’s nationwide dealer network, also included driver training to staff. This enables NZDF to get the best out of the Navara in all conditions and minimises damage due to poor driving skills.

Radiola Aerospace Limited – for the ongoing maintenance of the Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) systems at Ohakea and Whenuapai.
Radiola maintains the ILS and VORTACs at Ohakea and Whenuapai. Radiola engineers designed a procedure whereby the portable flight inspection system could fitted to the aircraft as an independent source of data, designed and procured new masts, and a differential GPS tracker system to replace the manual theodolite as a means of tracking aircraft during flight inspection.
