Defence starts market research into polar-capable uncrewed systems

23 Mar 2026

Defence has launched new market research into polar-capable uncrewed aerial systems, which would be used by the New Zealand Defence Force to enhance its maritime domain awareness.

“This request for information to industry aims to gather information and indicative costs to help inform the next stage of the project. It is not a request for proposals, nor a commitment to acquire systems,” said Sarah Minson, Deputy Secretary, Capability Delivery, Ministry of Defence.

“Defence is asking industry for information about uncrewed aerial systems that can operate in a range of challenging conditions, from the Southern Ocean and north of New Zealand to the equator."

This project was signalled in the 2025 Defence Capability Plan and is part of the Maritime Fleet Renewal Programme.

“A polar-capable uncrewed aerial system would be used to conduct a range of operations from Royal New Zealand Navy vessels, including support for search and rescue missions, and patrols to detect and track maritime security threats such as illegal fishing."

This Request for Information has been issued via the Government Electronic Tender Service.

No decisions have been made, or funding committed. Major Defence investment decisions require a business case process and approval from the Cabinet of the day.
