The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) makes an important contribution to international efforts that support freedom of navigation. This includes participation in a range of multinational groupings that contribute to maritime security across the Middle East region. NZDF personnel operate across the Indian Ocean, principally in and around the Arabian Sea, conducting activities within combined task forces to counter illicit activities of non-state actor such as piracy and smuggling.
