Feedback sought on proposed Long-term Insights Briefing topic

29 Apr 2025

Members of the public are invited to provide feedback on the Ministry’s proposed Long-term Insights Briefing topic: How technology innovations are likely to influence New Zealand’s defence capabilities beyond 2035.

Long-term Insight Briefings (LTIBs) are think pieces on important issues for the future of New Zealand. Under the Public Service Act 2020, agencies are required to produce an LTIB every three years. They provide an opportunity to enhance public debate on long-term challenges and contribute to future decision making. LTIBs are prepared independently from Ministers.

“We propose developing a Long-term Insights Briefing that looks at how technology innovations are likely to influence our defence capabilities beyond 2035. We know breakthroughs in technology and innovation are rapidly changing the capabilities available to defence forces so it is a topic we consider is timely,” Anton Youngman, Deputy Secretary Strategy Management and Assessment says.

Members of the public are invited to provide feedback on the proposed topic by 20 May 2025 by emailing engage@defence.govt.nz

The Ministry will then develop a briefing.

In accordance with the Public Service Act, the Ministry intends to consult publicly on the draft briefing later in 2025.

More details on how to contribute to the Ministry’s Long-term Insights Briefing process are available in the Consultation document.
