Tender issued for polar-capable uncrewed systems

06 Oct 2026

Defence has issued a request for tender (RFT) to acquire a polar patrol uncrewed aerial system (UAS) to enhance maritime domain awareness.

The system sought is expected to comprise one or more ground stations, three or more aircraft, as well as training, spares and sensors.

This system would be used to conduct a range of missions from Royal New Zealand Navy vessels, including search and rescue, and maritime security patrols to detect and track malicious activity such as illegal fishing.   Its primary purpose is to expand the naval patrol capability in the Southern Ocean and Antarctic waters.

This project was signalled in the 2025 Defence Capability Plan and funded in Budget 26. It forms part of the Maritime Fleet Renewal Programme.

The tender closes on 8 November and New Zealand suppliers are encouraged to register.
