This publication provides the documents supporting Cabinet's decision in August 2018 to deploy a New Zealand Defence Force P-3K2 maritime patrol aircraft to North East Asia, basing out of Japan, for a period of 30 days, between 1 September and 31 October 2018.

The aircraft would contribute to coordinated efforts, also involving the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and France, to support United Nations Security Council resolutions that sanction international trade with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

This publication comprises:

  • the Cabinet minute of decision: Deployment of P-3K2 Aircraft in Support of United Nations Security Council Sanctions Against North Korea [CAB-18-MIN-0390]
  • the associated Cabinet paper: Deployment of P-3K2 Aircraft in Support of United Nations Security Council Sanctions Against North Korea [CAB-18-SUB-0390].

Certain information has been withheld from the documents, in accordance with the following provisions of the Official Information Act 1982. Information is withheld where the making available of the information would be likely to prejudice:

  • the security or defence of New Zealand or the international relations of the Government of New Zealand [section 6(a)]
  • the entrusting of information to the Government of New Zealand on the basis of confidence by any international organisation [section 6(b)(ii)].
