Defence Major Project Report released

05/07/2022 News

The 2021 Defence Major Project report has been released, detailing progress on the 11 significant capability projects currently in delivery.

Presenting to the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee on 30 June, Deputy Secretary of Defence Capability Mike Yardley said the report highlighted that good progress continues to be made on delivery, even with the impact of COVID-19 and the disruption it has caused to the global supply chain.

“The Ministry of Defence and the NZDF continue to oversee and manage a significant investment by the Government in Defence. The 2021 Major Projects Report is evidence of this.”

During the reporting period:

  • The new dive and hydrographic vessel, HMNZS Manawanui, attended the Rim of the Pacific Exercise in Hawaii, as part of the ship’s introduction into service;

  • In September 2020, the Crown entered in contract with Thales Australia for the acquisition of 43 Bushmaster NZ5.5 protected medium vehicles, along with spares, ancillaries and training;

  • In December 2020, the frigate, HMNZS Te Kaha, returned to Devonport Naval Base, having completed the industrial and sea acceptance phases of the ANZAC Frigate Systems Upgrade project; and

  • The vertical construction works at Ohakea Air Force Base to provide the supporting infrastructure for the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft commenced.

“Looking forward, the total cost of capability projects currently in delivery remains at around $5.6 billion. Capital expenditure next year will be around $940 million.

“Driving this investment is an increasingly complex and dynamic strategic environment. The Government’s investment in Defence capability is a critical component in how we respond to these challenges.”

Each year the Major Projects Report is presented to the Select Committee. This year, presenting were Mike Yardley from the Ministry and Vice Chief of Defence, Air Vice Marshal Tony Davies.
