National Security Long-term Insights Brief: Consulting on the Briefing Topic

21/10/2021 News

The Ministry of Defence is supporting security sector work on a National Security Long-term Insights Briefing. The purpose of this briefing is to present free and frank analysis on national security risks, challenges and opportunities. It will outline threats we are likely to face, and the issues society may need to consider in the future. This work is being led by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with the support of other security sector agencies including the Ministry of Defence and NZDF.

The intention is to publish the National Security Long-term Insights Briefing in mid-2022, alongside a range of such briefs being prepared by government departments.

A consultation document has been released as the first stage, seeking feedback on the proposed briefing topic: Engaging an increasingly diverse Aotearoa New Zealand on national security risks, challenges and opportunities. The consultation document is available from the DPMC website here: https://consultation.dpmc.govt.nz/long-term-insights-briefing/national-security-long-term-insights-briefing(external link). A series of questions is provided on page 5 of the consultation document that can be emailed to NationalSecurity.LTIB@dpmc.govt.nz, or through the online survey on that webpage here: https://consultation.dpmc.govt.nz/long-term-insights-briefing/national-security-long-term-insights-briefing/consultation/(external link).

Further public consultation will occur in March to April 2022, and the final briefing is intended to be provided to Ministers and select committee(s) in mid-2022. Further information about the Long-term Insights Briefings being undertaken by various government departments is provided on the website of Te Kawa Mataaho here: https://www.publicservice.govt.nz/our-work/long-term-insights-briefings/public-consultations/(external link).
