Defence Industry Companion Study: 'Examining Options for Economic Improvement in the Sector'
This companion study to the Defence Review 2009 focuses on the defence industry, in particular 'examining options for economic improvement in the sector'. The study has been approached from three perspectives by looking at ways to optimise New Zealand's defence spending in the domestic economy, examining the potential to develop New Zealand's 'defence industry' export capability and examining the potential to improve economic activity from defence spending. This study makes a set of recommendations for the Government's consideration around developing and implementing a defence industry policy tailored to New Zealand's requirements. Youth Programmes Companion Study
This October 2010 companion study to the Defence Review 2009, prepared by MAJGEN (rtd) Lou Gardiner ONZN, focuses on the role of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) in youth development programmes generally and specifically in regard to the New Zealand Cadet Force. The study examines what the NZDF is delivering in the area of youth development, its effectiveness in this sector, and whether there is scope for expansion as well as the gaps, if any, in the NZDF's ability to deliver the effective youth development programmes. New Zealand Defence Review 2009 - Companion Study 3- Voluntary National Service
This companion study to the Defence Review 2009, entitled An Examination of the Concept and Viability of Voluntary National Service as a Whole-of-Government Strategy, focuses on the concept and viability of voluntary national service as a whole-of-Government strategy. The study examines the concept of voluntary national service and attempts to identify why New Zealand might consider developing one.

The report addresses five principal areas of concerns relating to governance and the associated organisational structure across both organisations, Capability System Development, Capability System Acquisition, Capability System Management, financial management and other related issues.

The Ministry of Defence and New Zealand Defence Force Review of Structural Arrangements
This review by Michael Wintringham in November 2009 questions and in some cases recommends changes to the respective responsibilities of the Ministry of Defence and New Zealand Defence Force. The report recommends addressing the statutory and structural arrangements which were put into place in a different environment, are inconsistent with conventional management practice, have created unnecessary tensions, or require "work-arounds" and other high cost responses.

Firecone Ltd Report: Defence Review 2009 - Long Term Funding Regime for the Defence Agencies
This October 2009 report was prepared by Firecone Ltd as an input to the Defence Review 2009. It addresses the question of how best to design a regime to provide long term funding certainty and sustainability for the New Zealand Defence Force and to a lesser extent the Ministry of Defence. The report sets out the economic principles that should be applied in designing a funding regime, assesses the current regime, and recommends areas for change.

Defence Review Youth Consultations - Summary of Findings
As part of public consultation for the Defence Review 2009, the Ministry of Youth assisted the Ministry of Defence in obtaining a youth perspective on New Zealand's defence and security policy. This report contains the results of the Defence Review youth consultation and helps the youth of New Zealand have their say on the Defence Review.
